Another successful Junior
Badminton Tournament was held at Tees Active’s Thornaby Pavilion.
The tournament, which is
organised by the Teesside Badminton Development Association (TBDA), is sponsored
by Tees Active Limited, who provided the Courts and Higman Sports, who provided
the shuttles. The Tournament is open to all players under 19 years old, who
attend a school or badminton club within the Tees Valley, regardless of
ability.
The tournament has 18
singles categories, 15 level doubles categories and 2 mixed doubles categories.
For each category there is a trophy and winner/s and runner/s-up medals to be
won.
There were a total of 118
competitors who entered into the tournament. Unfortunately some doubles
competitions had to be combined or were not run due to lack of entries in those
age groups.
There were 79 Boys and 23
Girls taking part in the Singles competitions on the Saturday. On Sunday, there
were
45 Boys and 19 Girls taking
part in the Doubles competitions
Tournament Referee, Roger
Cook, said, "Although this Tournament is aimed at all levels, a number of
the established junior players could not enter because they were playing in
national tournaments in other parts of the country. This is inevitable as the
standard in the area improves. The consequence of these players not entering
allowed the up and coming players a chance to achieve success in their age
groups. The level of play in all the standard events was exceptionally high.
This is mainly due to the volume of training these players now receive from the
Teesside Performance Centre (based at Thornaby Pavilion) and the local Junior
Premier Badminton Clubs.
However the main success of
the weekend was the number of “novice” boys players from schools badminton who
had entered. There were 14 in the U13
Novice, 22 in the U15 Novice and 12 in the U19 novice.
He wished to thank Stephanie
Barwick, from Ormesby Badminton Club, who was the Secretary for this Tournament
and all the Junior Club Coaches and other volunteers who helped out on the day.
Without their efforts, the tournament would not be a success. Also he wished to
praise the support of Tees Active and Higman Sports, whose continued
sponsorship of this tournament allows the entry fee to be kept low to encourage
all players to enter”
Dates of the next two Local
Junior Tournaments are 2nd/3rd October 2010 and 2nd/
3rd April 2011 at Thornaby Pavilion.
In addition Thornaby
Pavilion will be a hosting a number of BADMINTON England Junior Silver &
Bronze Tournaments during November, December 2010 and January, February 2011.
